Visit to Oxford Castle – Year 1 – 10 March 2017

Year 1 and 2 had a wonderful visit to the Oxford Castle on Friday 10th March.  The children climbed St. George’s Tower and discovered the many events that shaped the Castle’s history, from Empress Matilda’s famous escape across the frozen Thames to the chilling story of the Black Assize. The tower viewing platform provides a wonderful panorama of the city. The children also explored the atmospheric Crypt as well some of the cells in the 18th century prison buildings which tell the story of the gaol over four centuries.  In the workshop, children were given the opportunity to explore various artefacts from castle life, discuss their materials and uses and dress up in castle attire. They particularly enjoyed discovering the many smells (both good and bad) of castle life.
