Maths Challenge winners!

Four West Oxford young mathematicians took part in this year’s local Maths Challenge at St Edward’s School where we were one of 38 schools competing.

We’re delighted to announce that our first team came 1st, our second team came 5th, and overall we won the competition!

A big well done to the pupils representing West Oxford! Here’s what they had to say about the day:

“On 31st October we were invited to participate in a maths challenge, that was held at St Edward’s School, with other Year 6 classes from across Oxfordshire . We felt excited during the challenge, and the questions that they asked were very hard, but we persevered. Some of us had butterflies in our stomachs when they were announcing the winners and it was a heart-racing time! We felt over the moon to be announced as winners in one group and the winning school overall. It was the best day!”

Douglas Beadle, the event organiser, explains: “The format of this challenge brings a great deal of excitement to the hall with the young mathematicians competing with like-minded people. There is a great deal of physical activity as well as the expected cerebral processes.”

The challenge has three sections:

  • Find the values –matching sets of numbers and letters
  • Counting Down! – similar to the number game on Channel 4
  • The Big Event! – twenty puzzler problems with lateral thinking
